91st ride of 2020 - Thursday, 7/9/2020

2020 mileage: 2684.9

I left about 5:45 this morning, at which hour it was already very humid and 68°. The air was so humid that when I got 5 miles into my ride, at Marsh Park, I stopped to wipe off my glasses. However, as my usual glasses are still broken from my May 31 fall, I was wearing my older backup glasses, in which the lenses are held in by a thin filament that runs beneath each lens (as shown in this picture), and the right lens popped out.

As I continued on, I pondered the situation, and for some time considered continuing on with my (31-mile) ride to Matthei Botanical Gardens. But eventually I came to feel that riding that far with sub-optimal vision (the right lens out, carried loose in my pocket, and the left lens still experiencing fogging from the humidity) might be pushing my luck a bit too much. So I cut it back and just rode the Platt/Packard Square (13.6 miles in 1:37), in order to be at Pearle Vision for their 10:00 opening so I could get my glasses repaired.

 Thursday evening
I ended up having to take my trike back to the dealer (Jack's in Dearborn) this morning for some relatively minor issues (inspection of the change to see if it needed replacing, due to the high mileage I put on—it definitely did—a new mirror, a new handgrip on one side of the handlebars, and one of the wheels being "out of true" (i.e., having a slight wobble) and thus squeaking. When I was last there (in early June) they were severely backed up due to the pandemic and also some staffing issues they were having, and today after I presented them with the note I had listing my needs, I asked how long they thought it might be. They could not be certain at the time, as they said the boss had to prioritize repair work, and he was temporarily out.

on July 20, I'm having a minor outpatient surgical procedure and they tell me I'll be unable to ride for a minimum of three weeks afterwards. I hope I'll get the trike back before that time, but am prepared for the possibility that it may not happen.

in positive news, however, I was able to get my glasses repaired at Pearle Vision this morning before going to Dearborn.

2020 mileage: 4190.1 Another cool ride today—30°. I began at 1:00 p.m. A few miles into the ride it occurred to me that, while there are doubtless numerous days in, say, July, when it would feel good to be barefaced, right now (especially when riding) I'm very glad to have my beard. I rode the Platt/Packard Square, 13.7 miles, in 1:40. If I can do it again either tomorrow or Thursday, I'll pass one last mileage milestone (4200) for the year. However, the weather forecast for tomorrow doesn't look particularly promising (a possibility of cold rain much of the day). But Thursday, the last day of the year, looks better. And anyway, if it doesn't happen, I'm OK with that. I'm disappointed to have ridden less than half the days this year, having a mental image of myself riding roughly six days a week. 2020 mileage: 4166.0 After not riding since Wednesday (because of prepping for a guest on Thursday, and then Christmas yesterday), I was eager to try to squeeze one in today. But when I went out to check at midday, the snow we had gotten rendered the surface unsafe for riding, in my judgment, and the 25° temperature dissuaded me also, so after just now finishing a Zoom session with our grandchildren in which we continued our tradition of building gingerbread houses, I'm going to crawl in for a nap now. I decided that there's no reason I have to beat myself up!
