89th ride of 2020 - Tuesday, 7/7/2020
2020 mileage: 2650.7
Our fine weather pattern remains anchored over us. And since it's supposed to climb to a high of 92° or so by 1:00 p.m., I went out for an early ride again today, leaving at 6:15 in what was already warm (65°) and sunny weather, and the temperature climbed to 89° by the end of my ride.
I rode once again today to Matthei Botanical Gardens, for a round trip of 31.2 miles in about 3:25 (by my best guess). However, one aspect of the ride was frustrating—and that was the fact that the MapMyRide app on my phone did not work.
I have the vocal feedback set to every tenth of a mile (the smallest interval choice offered) so that I can keep an eye on how it's working. After the first couple of minutes I noticed that there was no feedback, so I stopped to check it, and saw that although it was recording my time, it was not recording any distance whatsoever. I then went into Settings in the app, and tried everything I could imagine to get it working, but to no avail. I then tried it again at a half mile into the ride (still unsuccessfully), and about a mile in, as well as two and a half miles in -- all still with no luck. I made one final try at marsh Park (5 miles in)), when i even restarted the phone, wondering if that might help—but it did not. So I rode on, listening to music, and having a general idea how my mileage was building on the basis of previous rides.
When I got to Matthei, as I turned around to start for home, I decided to restart the phone one more time ... and this time it worked! (I still have no idea what was the cause of the problem, however.) So I have a video, not of the whole ride, but of the second half of it.
Also, I was happy to see Jim Alvey again today, near the end of my ride (as I was riding on Silo Ridge, nearing Lohr Rd., with a little over 2 miles left). By that point I was slowing markedly, and he went by me almost as though I were standing still, as he threw up his hand and called out a friendly, "Hi, Allen!"
I am reposting my video of yesterday's ride, as well, since today's route was identical ... however, my time was significantly slower today.
