71st ride of 2020 - Wednesday, 6/17/2020

2020 mileage: 2227.8

It's been a difficult and challenging week. After a good ride on Sunday, I was feeling inexplicably lazy on Monday and took a rest day. Yesterday I went out at 5:30 (I absolutely LOVE the extended daylight at this time of year), and began by doing my weekly airing up of my tires. But the first one I tried behaved puzzlingly ... with every stroke of the pump, it emitted a mild back HISS and expelled some air. I couldn't solve the mystery, and so had to take a second straight day off ... and by late afternoon, the tire was completely flat.

Today my good friend Dan Cogan came over to help me out. Dan is a retired lawyer, a photographer, and an avid cyclist. He discovered that the valve stem on that tire had gotten bent somehow, so that the pump could not connect to it securely. When he changed the tube, putting in a new one with its new stem, the problem was solved.

Afterwards, I did a very modest ride, just grateful to be back at it again. I did a round trip to Marsh Park, for an even 10.0 miles in 1:08 in summery weather -- sunny and 83°. It was tolerable, not being too humid, but things are supposed to change by the weekend, with 90° in the forecast,
