3rd ride of 2020 - Monday, 2/24/2020

2020 mileage: 811.8

By disciplined riding on the stationary bike at LA Fitness in recent weeks, I've been able to continue to build my annual mileage, even though today was only the third time I've been able to ride outside all year (and the first since February 3).

I considered riding the 20-mile round trip to Dexter (Baker Rd.), but in light of my long layoff, I eventually thought better of it and felt it would be more prudent to keep today's ride shorter. So I rode the Platt/Packard square—13.9 miles in 1:32.

I hated to miss riding yesterday, when it was 50° and sunny in the afternoon! But Michelle and I hugely enjoyed a concert in Tecumseh by the male chorus in which my brother John (JB) sings, and I felt this was a worthy exchange. Following are a picture of the chorus, and a close-up of my brother.

Today, though it was not quite as nice, it was still very enjoyable—44° and partly sunny when I began just before 1:00, and up to 47° at the end. I have a few years ago ridden on a day as cold as 17°, but now with age I'm cutting myself some slack, and have decided that 40° is my cutoff point, which today easily met. However, this morning the guys in an early Monday devotional and Bible reading group in which I participate counseled me that I'd better enjoy it today, as seasonable cold is predicted to return to us later this week.

I'm hoping for my upcoming birthday (March 17—a Tuesday this year) to ride 63 miles for my 63 years. This will easily be the longest ride I've ever done; previously I've done a couple of 50-milers. The weight and gearing of the trike do not allow for much speed, so this will take me between 7 and 8 hours of riding time (not counting breaks). But I plan to just begin early, and keep chipping away at it, with no regard to speed.
